We actually do have a cardboard box on the locking cavity for our dye laser, though I'm taking a bit of liberty with it here: the cardboard box is there to help thermally stabilize the cavity to keep the laser from drifting. The laser doesn't blink or unlock when the box isn't there.

Also, though I'm overall satisfied with how the images came out, I am a bit disappointed that the conversion for the animated gif messed up the appearance of the laser beam a bit...
