This always bugged me about that scene at the beginning of Back to the Future.
Transcript1 //After the hearing, Mike, Ashley, and Abby are in the apartment.
Ashley: Well, that could have gone better.
Mike: Hey, we're not in jail, and they didn't confiscate our time machines, so I'd say it went pretty well.

Ashley: So, with the rigid timeline hypothesis, how is it that we sent half a million people to various times in history, and none of them spilled the secret of time travel?
Abby: Some tried. They were laughed off for various reasons. It helps that none of them actually knew how the time machine worked.

Ashley: But they had the time machine, so they could have simply shown it to the people in the past.
Abby: They had a car that was preprogrammed to go to a certain time period and then return.

Mike: Also "how to use it" is not the same as "how it works".
Abby: Doc Brown was a fool.
